Reviews:

As seven inches go, this is without a doubt the best one that ever graced my record player. Period. Chicago born Thee Arthur Layne hits you full throttle with their Hvy Drt Vol.I single that is laced with two amazing tracks. Namely: Father Friendly and Scorpion Crawl. Both of which are full on dune boogie rockers straight out of the psychedelic seventies. Its punky, its proto-metal and grooves the hell out of every pants in the room. These four cats know exactly where the good mustard is stored! And they’ve taken all the bottles with them when they went into the studio. It’s so raw and soulful that the blues they bring becomes fuzzy, warm and shining. It gives you a warm almost delirious chill, especially when you also hear those howling vocals by Screamin’ Jay Walter. And together with all that visceral drumming and whirlwind guitar this amazing seven inch can’t stop spinning… Especially cause there are also those tiny mellotron, Wurlitzer or even wind chime sounds? Simply stunning!

Raunchy bass and a thick groove to boot, Thee Arthur Layne bare their soul on “Hvy Drt Vol 1”. A mere nine minutes long, this 7” is split into two songs. The opening cut is a bellbottomed freedom run back to the 70s, bringing forth a hip shaking groove that’ll rattle the speakers off their perch. Flip this bad boy over and you’ve got a bluesy march to get through named `Scorpion Crawl, ´ and crawl it does. From dive-bomb guitar solos to the way Screamin’ Jay Walter buzzes, hums, squeals, and whistles about women and the life he leads, Thee Arthur Layne shows us on “Hvy Drt Vol 1” of what a balls-out blues band should sound like circa 2015.

Thee Arthur Layne is a band I've been hearing more and more about. Seeing more posts about on social media. Observe them playing with more and more bands that I dig and respect. And based upon this tasty 7" licorice platter, that trend is going to continue. Firmly rooted in psychedelia but not plowing the post-Kyuss/Fu Manchu road of stoner rock, Thee Arthur Layne seem to take their roots a tad farther back into time, late-sixties, lava-lamp, black-light-ready-acid party-era of time to be precise. Fuzz and wah aboud but are never overwhelming and never mask the soulful vocals or melodic songcraft. "Father Friendly" is simply a late-sixties, mescaline ingested explosion of primitive blues, swirling guitars and thick chords. "Scorpion Crawl" somehow manages to drop even deeper into the fuzz-laden stew of acid rock. Man, those vocals drip of soul, like a freaked out Sly and the Family Stone stealing Hendrix's guitar and playing while doing laps in the bongwater of MC5.
